2021 Speakers

Dr. Mark Powell
Mark Powell is CEO of Marineholmen RASLab AS, a Norwegian contract research and innovation company with a primary focus of RAS technology and land-based aquaculture production. The company works with many different types of innovative research in RAS and forms a cornerstone of the Ocean Innovation Norwegian Catapult. His career in Norway over the past 13 years has included Professor of Aquaculture and Pro-dean for Research, University of Nordland; Senior researcher and manager at the Norwegian Institute for Water Research; Professor of Fish Pathology at the University of Bergen and Senior researcher at the Institute for Marine Research. He currently holds a Professor II position at the University of Bergen. Mark has a PhD in fish physiology from the University of Ottawa, Canada; Masters in histology and pharmacology from the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island, Canada after graduating from the University of Stirling in Scotland. His 30 year career has involved his research into fish health and physiology of aquaculture fish in Canada, Australia and Europe with a focus on gill and cardiac health. His 25 years of expertise in RAS includes having taught at the University of Tasmania in Australia where he also operated a private consultancy company focusing on RAS design, management and fish health.

Amy Novogratz
Co-founder and Managing Partner of Aqua-Spark, a pioneer investment fund for sustainable aquaculture. Aqua-Spark is a global investment fund with a mission to transform the global aquaculture industry into one that is healthier, more sustainable and more accessible. They invest in aquaculture companies across the value chain, from farming operations to alternative feed ingredients, disease battling, technology, all the way to consumer facing aquaculture products. These companies are solving some of the industry’s big challenges while bringing returns that are comparable to today’s traditional industry. The portfolio works as an ecosystem, with the companies agreeing to collaborate on optimal solutions, and working together toward this shared vision of a more efficient global aquaculture industry.
Prior to Aqua-Spark Amy served as director of the TED Conference’s annual TED Prize for almost a decade, leading more than twenty global collaborations across a broad spectrum of sectors, including healthcare, education, science, technology, conservation, art, and activism. With TED, her list of notable projects include: Sylvia Earle’s Mission Blue, Jamie Oliver’s Food revolution, JR’s Inside Out Project, and Bono’s One.org among others. Amy met her partner/ co-founder through ocean conservation work connected to Sylvia Earle’s Mission Blue. With Aqua-Spark Amy serves on the boards of Love the Wild, eFishery, and Xpert Sea and Energaia.

Bryton Shang
Bryton Shang is the founder and CEO of Aquabyte, a Silicon Valley and Norway-based venture-backed company applying machine learning and computer vision to aquaculture fish farming for biomass estimation, sea lice counting, and feed optimization and formulation. Bryton was named to the 2019 Forbes 30 Under 30 in Manufacturing & Industry.
Graduating at the top of his engineering class at Princeton University, Bryton has led several venture-backed startups. Bryton built deep learning algorithms to diagnose cancer as CTO of HistoWiz, a biotechnology firm. He also co-founded iQ License, a brand licensing platform, and Nikao Investments, an algorithmic trading firm.

Gerard Chia
Gerard heads the fund's business development efforts and is part of the deal sourcing and investment team of VisVires New Protein (VVNP), a Singapore-based Venture Fund focused on innovative solutions to the acute inefficiencies of the food and feed industry. They look for disruptive technologies to improve the interaction between food and health, solutions to tackle food waste, food safety & traceability, and to address the unsustainability of the protein production system.
Most recently, Gerard was the right-hand to the former Chairman of the holding co. of the Firmenich Group, where he was Head of Special Projects investing across multiple asset classes. Previously, he was an Investment Analyst with Saratoga Capital, an Indonesia-focused private equity fund.

Larsen Mettler
Larsen brings over 17 years of experience in the oceans and finance sectors. Prior to joining S2G, Larsen was an owner and the Chief Financial Officer of Silver Bay Seafoods, a position he held since 2016. Before joining Silver Bay, Larsen was a Director at KeyBanc Capital Markets where he led the firm’s Seafood Investment Banking and Corporate Lending practice. Larsen has also held various positions with the United Nations, the Executive Office of the President of the United States, and DoubleClick. Larsen holds an MBA with a concentration in Investment Banking from Wake Forest and Dual BBAs in Finance and Information Systems from the University of New Mexico.

Nils Arne Grønlie
As General Manager of PHARMAQ Analytiq Nils Arne leads highly talented teams of aquaculture specialists who safeguard fish health and welfare by using advanced detection and diagnostics methods to create value for our customers. Nils Arne has also worked as Senior Director of Operations in PHARMAQ AS, coordinating various functions of the aquaculture business across functions and geographies, including global product supply activities, EHS, BCP, and IPR.

Sophie Ryan
Sophie is CEO of the Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) - a leadership group representing over 40% of the global farmed salmon industry committed to continuous improvements in their sustainability performance. Her work focuses on motivating environmental improvements, developing effective communication strategies to improve industry transparency, and building multi-stakeholder relationships to help achieve the group’s sustainability goals. Having worked with the group since it’s conception in 2013, Sophie has supported the growth of the group to where it is today and helped construct and launch the first industry-wide Sustainability Report in the food sector. Sophie is also a member of the Champions Network to the United Nations Food Systems Summit.

Björgólfur Hávardsson
Björgólfur Hávardsson MSc, is the Innovation Manager with the Seafood Innovation Cluster, a Norwegian Centre of Expertise member based out of Bergen, Norway.
After three decades of multiple biological roles in the aquaculture industry, Mr. Hávardsson has an extensive knowledge of the biological possibilities and challenges in modern salmon farming. Through working in the industry on such diverse fields as fish counting, biomass estimation, smoltification, fish welfare, feeding systems and -behaviour as well as writing practical books on netfouling in Europe and South America, Hávarðsson is experienced in developing and presenting ideas and practical methods through courses, presentations and articles in several languages.
Mr. Hávardsson holds a Master´s degree in Aquaculture Biology from the University of Bergen (UIB) and a degree from an executive program in Strategy and Branding in the seafood industry from the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH).

Jennifer Kuo
Jennifer Kuo serves as Chief Technology Development & Sustainability Officer of Grobest Group. She joined Grobest in 1992, where she held various positions, including: General Manager of Animal Health Business Group, General Manager of Animal Health Research Institute, General Manager of Fuzhou Omnipro Industrial Co. Ltd, Vice President of Business Development & Planning, Vice President of Administrative Management, Director of Project Management, Special Assistant of Group Executive Director to assist business management, Supervisor of Aquaculture Research Center, and Supervisor of Quality Assurance Department. She was also appointed project manager to key projects and the leader of Ingredient Development team.
Ms. Kuo holds a master’s and a bachelor’s degrees from the Department of Aquaculture, National Taiwan Ocean University and has a broad experience in the aquaculture industry. She has also earned a professional certificate in Corporate Sustainability Management.

Elisabeth Øvstebø
Investment Director and Managing Partner in Link Venture Capital/ Link Capital , a Nordic VC firm. Highly experienced executive and serial entrepreneur. Extensive, hands-on experience in startups, funding, finance and early-stage investments. Held multiple key roles in early-stage companies and funding. Previous experience in management and strategy consulting, organizational development and financial industry. Over the past decade, built a broad investment portfolio of early-stage, growth stage, listed and property investments. Holds a Master of Management from BI –Norwegian School of Management.

Dr. Astrid Buran Holan
Dr Astrid Buran Holan is the Head of Development – CAS in ScaleAQ, Norway. She works with the technological and biological aspects of water treatment in Closed Aquaculture System (CAS) on land and in sea, as well as fish requirements in such systems. Her focus is on new developments, planning and dimensioning of new farms, advising and training. She also holds a position as an associate professor II at the University of Tromsø (UiT), Norway.
Education and experience
She has a PhD degree from NTNU in environmental technology and recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), and a master’s degree in biological treatment of wastewater from a pulp and paper factory. After working as a researcher in Nofima for several years, she is now working in the new Norwegian aquaculture technology giant ScaleAQ. ScaleAQ is combining experience and know-how from both sea and land-based fish farming.

Jelena Kolarevic

Langley Gace
Langley Gace is Senior Vice President of Innovasea. Previously he served as President of OceanSpar, LLC, where he managed development of high performance fish pens, operating equipment and support services to leading offshore aquaculture companies. Mr. Gace holds a Master of Sciences in Mechanical Ocean Engineering from the University of New Hampshire, where his research on scale model submersible fish pens was a catalyst for the open ocean aquaculture program there. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in physics from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.

Sarai Kemp
As VP Business Development for Trendlines Agrifood (Israel) since 2012 and VP Deal Flow for the Trendlines Agrifood Fund (Singapore), Sarai Kemp is responsible for sourcing start-ups, evaluating opportunities, negotiating, and closing investments and working with portfolio companies post-investment. Sarai is a board member on Hargol FoodTech, AgroScout, FruitSpec and AlgaHealth.
Sarai brings more than 20 years’ experience in agricultural, consumer goods, and high-tech industries, including in sales, marketing, and business development for international companies such as Afimilk and Keter Plastic. She has worked intensively with companies in East Asia.
Sarai received an MBA from Haifa University and a B.A. from Tel Aviv University.

Nathan Pyne-Carter
Nathan Pyne-Carter received a BA Hons from Clare College, Cambridge University. He took over running of the family business in 2012 where he quickly grew the business through two investment rounds (AquaSpark and 4J Studios), with central office at the Water’s Edge in Dundee, and regional offices in Chile, Norway, Canada and Australia. Current headcount in the company stands at twenty-six with rapid expansion planned for 2021. He has been an invited speaker keynote speaker at industry events such as Oceanology, HavExpo and Seafood Expo North America, as well as winner of the Tayside and Fife IOD, Regional Director of the Year Award in 2020, National Director of the Year for Innovation winner in 2019, and Courier Business award winning Entrepreneur of the Year in 2019. He spearheads a creative look at problems in aquaculture and award-winning innovations span unique in-water electric stunning systems for fish, environmentally responsible acoustic deterrents, 3D biomass camera systems, and lice removal technology for fish.

Howard Tang
Howard Tang is CEO of Peritus Capital, a sustainability focused investment firm focused on supporting and financing the aquaculture, alternative protein, and renewable energy sectors.
Previously, Howard was with the Mergermarket Group (now Acuris), leading the company's global fixed income research and analytics team. He helped to grow the business into a billion-dollar company through multiple strategic and private equity exits.
Howard then launched a business finance company called Simpler Funding that preceded an equity investment into Nordic aquaculture focused advisor. Howard eventually joined the latter full time as Managing Director and Head of Global Capital Markets; in this role he helped scale the firm into a global business, structuring complex financial solutions for some of the top seafood companies in the world.
Howard holds a CFA designation and Series 63, 7, 79, 24, and 27 licenses.

Tom Prins
Tom manages the process of screening new business opportunities for Aqua-Spark and negotiating new investments. He has been directly involved throughout the investment process for the majority of the current Aqua-Spark portfolio, ranging from investments in feed ingredients, technology, health, genetics and production. Tom joined Aqua-Spark in 2015. Prior to Aqua-Spark, he worked in the Gulf region with the Netherlands Agricultural Attaché for GCC countries and the Netherlands Embassy in the Sultanate of Oman, where he conducted research on the development of local aquaculture industry. He has also spearheaded transnational events to elevate public and private dialogue on emerging opportunities in aquaculture. Tom received a Master in Business Geography from Utrecht University. A fervent surfer, Tom is dedicated to conserving the ocean for future generations.

Kjetil Haga

Tore Norheim Hagtun
Tore hails from the arctic fishing village of Bleik on Andøya island and has a master's degree in cybernetics and robotics. With a specialization in fishery and aquaculture applications, Tore has worked hands-on with industrial digitalization for the past decade. Co-founding and running a software company since graduating, Tore has worked with data and automation solutions for everything from micro-algae to salmon, with customers ranging from startups to government institutions. With Clarify we are helping people make better decisions by combining data, human expertise, and applied AI tools in one engaging interface.

David Kelly
David Kelly is CEO and chief technology officer of Innovasea, which is revolutionizing aquaculture and advancing the science of fish tracking to make our oceans and freshwater ecosystems sustainable for future generations. He is responsible for setting Innovasea’s overall strategy and leading research and development efforts to design and build the world’s most technologically advanced aquatic solutions.
Prior to Innovasea, David served as president and chief executive officer of Bluefin Robotics, a provider of autonomous underwater vehicles and related marine robotics technology. David is a senior executive and technologist with experience that ranges from early-stage high tech companies to Fortune 500 firms.
David holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, a Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Dallas and an MBA from Southern Methodist University.

Dmitry Kozachenok

Larry Feinberg
Larry Feinberg, PhD. is an entrepreneurial industrial biotechnologist and the CEO and co-founder of KnipBio. He has expertise in early-stage technology ventures, bio-product discovery and large-scale commercialization initiatives. With the advanced biofuel technology firm Mascoma Corporation, Larry held leadership responsibilities in scientific discovery and business development roles. Spearheading the Organism Discovery group, Larry oversaw bioprospecting and strain development duties. Leading the New Business Opportunities team, he was responsible for multiple commercial candidates including the development of the cellulosic ethanol biorefinery initiative in Alberta, Canada which he directed from concept through advanced engineering. In total, Larry co-authored and received greater than $80MM of Canadian government investment through three separate awards.
Larry’s technical training occurred at the University of Massachusetts where he obtained his PhD through his studies of the biogeochemistry, physiology and genetics of hyperthermophile microbes living in extreme environments. Some of the ecologies he has sampled include approximately 20 different hot springs, landfills, agricultural compost piles and industrial facilities. Prior to his graduate training, Larry ran a small family business for 5 years and was a high school teacher before that.

Matthias Hofer
Matthias Hofer is the Managing Partner at Stonehaven Consulting AG with over 15 years of experience in Animal Health. He served on the executive committees of two major Animal Health companies for a total of 7 years. Between 2009 and 2013 he led the global Aqua Health business at Novartis Animal Health (NAH). Later on, he was Global Leader Emerging Business at Elanco and a member of Elanco’s global executive committee. During 2014 and with Elanco’s intention to buy NAH, Matthias served as overall pre-merger integration leader on the Novartis side. In that role, Matthias led a large team and efforts to prepare integration pre-closing overall including carve-out preparations of operations linked to Novartis.

Maye Walraven
Maye leads InnovaFeed’s Business Development team, she’s in charge of building value for customers by developing the company’s innovative products. As part of her role, she oversees InnovaFeed’s relationships with various stakeholders across the value chain, from feed manufacturers, to farmers, distributors, NGOs and certification bodies. Prior to joining InnovaFeed she worked at McKinsey & Company as part of the Sustainability and Resource Productivity practice in New York (USA) for 5 years and helped clients deploy sustainable business solutions. Maye has a Bachelor of Engineering from Centrale Paris (France) and a master’s in Business Sustainability from the University of Queensland (Australia).

Felix Collins
Felix Collins has been in the insect industry for three years, starting at university, where he was studying something completely unrelated (psychology and business). After the EU’s 2017 legislation promoting the use of BSF, Felix became obsessed with the industry and started looking into commercial applications. The black soldier fly has so many different potential benefits and he’s a big believer in exploring more than just protein meal. Felix is currently on the Executive Committee of the Asian Food and Feed Insect Association (AFFIA) and scaling up his colony in Thailand.

Dr. Lynne U. Sneddon
Dr Lynne Sneddon obtained her Ph.D at Glasgow University studying animal behaviour, physiology and neurobiology. After a postdoctoral position studying weakly electric fish Lynne moved to the Roslin Institute where she began characterising nociceptors (pain receptors) in fish for the first time with Dr Mike Gentle. Lynne moved to the University of Liverpool in 2002 on a fellowship where she has used an integrative approach to understand mechanisms of behaviour and specialises in addressing question in fish welfare. In September 2021 Lynne took up a new academic position at Gothenburg University in Sweden.

Dr. Claude Kaplan
Dr Claude Kaplan has over 20 years’ experience on the identification, evaluation and exploitation of novel agritech innovations and intellectual property. Previous roles have included; director of an IP commercialisation consultancy, animal & aquaculture health investment specialist for government and head of IP commercialisation for an international aquaculture company. Claude is currently the Director of Commercial Relations, Hatch Innovation Services (HIS). HIS, part of HATCH group - a global catalyst for aquaculture innovation, provides support and assistance to companies, governments and researchers in the sourcing, management and commercialisation of aquaculture technologies.

Shai Ufaz
Shai Ufaz brings over 15 years of experience in biotechnology and molecular biology project management. Prior to establishing ViAqua, Shai served as project manager at Protalix Biotherapeutics, a biotechnology pharmaceutical company and as Team leader at TransAlgae, an algae-based biotech startup. Shai holds a Ph.D. in plant biotechnology from Tel Aviv University and a postdoctoral fellow from the Weizmann Institute of Science.

Ben North
Ben holds the position of Director of Portfolio and Innovation Strategy at PHARMAQ, the aquaculture health business of Zoetis. Ben has worked for PHARMAQ since 2008 and held a variety of technical and commercial roles, including 7 years as the Country Manager of PHARMAQ’s UK business. In 2017 Ben moved across full time to PHARMAQ’s Oslo-based R&D organisation as R&D Portfolio Director, before taking on the current role in 2020, which is focused on delivering an overarching innovation strategy across the continuum of care for aquaculture health.
Before joining PHARMAQ, Ben worked as a post-doctorate researcher at the Stirling University, where he also undertook his PhD. The focus of Ben’s research was investigating the impact of husbandry factors such as stocking density and water quality on fish welfare. This research identified operational welfare indicators for fish in commercial aquaculture systems and generated welfare indices by combining a range of objective indicators. Ben also holds a BSc in Marine Biology, an MSc in Aquaculture and in 2018 completed an Executive MBA program at Warwick Business School.
